Cancer in dogs is an increasingly common phenomenon. Every fourth dog in Poland suffers from cancer. There are many types of cancer, and each of them has a different management regimen. As in humans, they differ in malignancy, as well as in whether they are solid or disseminated. One of the goals of cancer treatment in animals is to maintain a proper quality of life for as long as possible. Proper nutrition of dogs – cancer patients and maintaining a healthy weight of the dog is an important component of this procedure. Cancer wasting syndrome in a dog In the case of dogs, we also need to remember about cancer cachexia syndrome. In the case of a dog with cancer, weight loss occurs, and this applies to both fat mass and muscle mass. This often happens even when you take in the right amount of food. Depending on the treatment and condition of the animal, not only its energy requirements change, but also changes in cell metabolism, the absorption of nutrients decreases, and the dog’s eating behavior may change.
