Obesity is a disease of affluence that also affects our dogs. A dog’s weight higher by about 10% already means overweight, and in the case of a weight greater than 20%, we are talking about obesity.
This calculator is based on the ability to correctly assess the dog’s body shape and measure body weight. If the input data is incorrect, then the result of the calculation will also be burdened with error and may lead to the determination of an incorrect weight loss goal and the value of energy supply. We recommend that you use the calculator if you have knowledge related to the proper weight loss process.
The calculator contains proprietary algorithms based on the experience of implementing the diet, using, for m.in, the assessment of the dog’s body figure on a scale of 1-9 with an indication of the body fat content (FEDIAF 2019 and 2021), selected methods of measuring the dog’s body included in the textbook of Dr. n.wet. R.E. Menguez “Obesity of dogs and cats”, which should be a must-read for everyone using the calculator. We also encourage you to read our training and materials on dog obesity before using the calculator.
The calculator is still in the testing phase. We kindly ask you to submit comments and suggestions.
A calculator is an auxiliary tool, and decisions should be made based on the situation of a particular dog. It should be remembered that it does not take into account unusual situations – so, for example, significant obesity with the current high caloric supply. In the case of dogs, remember that the optimal percentage of weight loss per week is 1-1.5%, and the caloric supply that we limit should not be drastically different (more than 20%) from the current supply at the beginning of weight loss. Then, based on your knowledge, you should correct the calculations accordingly at the beginning of weight loss and then implement the recommendations resulting from the following formulas.
The results page will show the energy supply indicated for weight loss based on 2 formulas:
Dog’s daily metabolisable energy requirement = 70 x (current body weight in kg to the power of 0.75)
Dog’s daily metabolic energy requirement = 80 x (target body weight in kg to the power of 0.75)
Formula for daily demand with reduction based on current body weight – remember about the right pace of weight loss and increase/decrease caloric supply depending on the effect achieved. Remember that if the dog’s weight decreases, then you should reduce the energy demand accordingly. In the calculator you will see a weight loss plan for weeks. You can change:
% of weight loss per week, depending on the stage of weight loss,
If you estimate that you think your dog’s overweight is different from what the calculator calculated, you can enter the amount of excess weight into the field and the calculator will recalculate the goals per week until your dog reaches their optimal weight.
If you haven’t already, choose one of the plans below that best suits your needs and enjoy!
